It seems to be mostly a volume thing. Playing with the volume of the TV set itself (usually turning it down) along with the WiiSpeak in game volume options in MH3. We just got to where we are by trial and error.
When we first started using it, it was terrible. Nothing but distortion, feedback, and echos. I can see why most people just give up on it. Even now, it is far from perfect for us, but VERY usable.
In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.
