yea ill admit 3 wasnt as good as 2 which may have been apart of the reason for the decline. And yea i think a proper 2d sonic would sell good just not the sonic 1 and 2 levels.

This is what i want. Sega seem like they're doing that with the 2D part of the Generations trailer. but i find the 3D stuff nausating and too anime. instead of keeping Sonic like a cartoony, comic mischief type brand, they turned it into a serious anime type thing, and made it awful imho. and theres too many characters.

Mario hasnt turned into an anime type thing and the brand is still very successful, i would like to see a return of classic Sonic, like in the 2D part of that trailer, with no trace of the modern Sonic what so ever. and no homing attack. and no extra friends, just Tails, and maybe, maybe Knuckles, but no one else.

See heres my problem with the 2d sonics like this video the controls look and usually feel akward. Its never seems like they try to refine it more or less they just try to immitate old 2d sonic controls which feel a bit stiff to me. Mario on the other hand usually feels a bit better as his series progresses in his 2d games.
