They mainly punked them in a sense that Sony and Microsoft are catering to upmarket customers. But neither of them will be able to move even further upmarket (800$ consoles? Longer development cycle for games?).

If Nintendo plays their cards right they will be better at motion gaming (just like you said) and "hardcore" enough to get a decent share of the upmarket customers which would screw Sony's and Microsoft's business. They weren't even able to recover their losses yet.

I don't get the purpose of that new Nintendo controller so I'll wait until e3 to go bonkers over anything. Things are getting more interesting, though.

This.  If Nintendo was smart, they'd focus on making a 'upscale' yet affordable system next gen, like the GameCube last gen.  If they could come out with something around $250 that's the same or slightly more powerful than the PS3, they'd probably do very well.  Unless third parties actively boyvott their system like they have been since the N64.

Next gen, both MS and Sony have a tough decision.  They can either keep focusing on the 'hardcore' gamer with graphics and some $400-$600 system.  Or they'll follow the plan of Nintendo did this gen of a more cost effective and 'sensible' system around $250-$300 dollars.  The upside is by 2014, they can probably make quite a substantial system for $300.  The downside is, if Nintendo is looking to release a new system by 2012, then both MS and Sony could be upstaged greatly.  The PS2 came out only a year before the competition and Wii came out less than a year after the XBOX360.  But if both MS and Sony are looking 2 or more years after the next Nintendo system...things could get interesting.
