Wii is turning into irrelevancy for third parties, now more than ever. The line up of games is simply catastrophic in terms of quantity and quality. If we add the fact that Nintendo's first party team resources are moving away from the Wii to the 3DS and the unknown, then we can land in the conclusion that they are indeed focusing on the next system.
I will have to agree with one of the jounralist/dev that said that getting a head start might be the only way for them to attract 3rd party devs to their newer console, if Sony and MS are developing very powerful next gen systems. Price was really not an issue for hardcore gamers this gen, as proven by the sales of both the 360 and the PS3 which easily surpass Wii's marketshare. And a price cut for the Wii can only point to the Wii 2 direction.
Nintendo has little to gain from the Wii anymore and if they don't switch tracks soon, then they will be all alone for the rest of the gen and possibly during next gen too. It would be a tragedy for Iwata if things turn 180°. Hopefully he makes the right decisions and when the time is right. They have a lot to learn from their mistakes this gen, a lot.

They're mistake was moving away from the things that made Wii such a success in its first few years, UGC, Super Gamecube games
Power won't make their next system successful, nor will it make the next Sony and MS systems successful, having quality games that catch the auience like the Wii did in its first few years will do that, third parties have never been very supportive of Nintendo, and I don;t expect that to change next gen, so chasing them is futile and wasteful

No, third parties don't support Nintendo and have never done so. Of course only if you ignore the NES, the SNES, the GB, GBC, GBA, DS and 3DS.
If Nintendo doesn't get more third party support it will be the biggest mistake. Remember that now that the HD's are getting a constant stream of games and that Nintendo has almost ceased suppporting the Wii, sales are going down dramatically. It will be a short lived phenomenum if all that Nintendo gets are first party games and then long droughts. And power will be important, even Nintendo admitted to having their next console display HD resolutions. Besides that a new innovation is needed for them to succeed, but power will have to be better than or on par with what the actual HD consoles have, else they will be ignored by 3rd parties like Wii was. If they get both things right and somehow manage to avoid the big 1st party game droughts and actually localize some games, then I don't see any reason why a gamer would choose any other console, unless what they want are the first party offerings. Right now, what's selling the consoles mostly are the 3rd party AAA games and in PS3's case, the more constant flow of big 1st party games, something Wii got intermitently and not anymore.

Many of the systems you note either had monopolies on the market, or had comeptitors with equal or even better third party support.
Actually worrying about power and third party support will be the worst option for Nitnendo, remember the GCN and N64, big power, weak sales, the Wii with weak power and pathtic third party support dominated for years.
Even ow, the PS3 is barely beating the Wii, at a point where the Wii has had a long term drought, what does that tell you about the importance of third party and power, it tells me that its really not that important.
