They didn't do it with the Wii. Wii launched with strong 1st party as well as every major holiday had big nintendo IPs. Nintendo didn't put the brakes on utnil 2009/2010 which was too late as 3rd parties had already started pulling support.
Not to mention the drastic difference in technology and architecture promoted that withdrawl as well.
3DS is definitely following this path and Nintendo will likely do the same with their home console.
