Too many people have vested interest in the former status quo.
There is a lot of misinforation and misinterpretation. And there is misunderstanding.
Just remember, the median age in the US is approaching 40. It is older in Europe and Japan. Thus, if you just appeal to the core, your market is not growing as fast (and in some cases it is shrinking) as other segments of the population.
There are many who cannot grasp that.
Plus, Microsoft's reliability issues and Sony's (perceived) lack of a good games (and actual lack of a variety of genres) given their prices have led both systems to perform not as well as the Wii.
