For a new system, too put it bluntly. That's fucking horrible. Especially for the system that's being hailed as the successor to the DS.

People don't realize that DS's first year on the market was pretty bad as well

So it was with the PS1 and the PS2 was nothing like it. There's a significant difference between a platform stabilishing a brand and it's much hyped successor, specially when the platform in question is best selling of all time. To simply expect the marked to buy your console with no compelling price or games sounds awfully like what Sony did with the PS3 by 06-07.
