You're half right. Wii didn't sell just because of motion controls, but it didn't sell because of Mario either. Gamecube had Mario and that didn't help it. You could argue that it sold because of 2D Mario, but that didn't come out until 2009. It sold because it brought games back to basics, meaning simple to play, hard to master, fast paced arcade style games that cater to a mass audience.
