Of course I finsihed it, I spent like 300-ish hours on the game.
But I'd just go desesperate with the other slow weapons, it just didn't work.

I agree. I hate the hammer, bowgun, longsword and (to an extent) lance. But the SnS was so underpowered you HAD to go for Switch Axe and Longsword IMO. They aren't slow...

But I also liked my trusty shield, it was of great help.

I suppose. But you could just dodge and it was jus as effective anyway 
The SnS shield was poor anyway, it absorbed around about 25 damage, enough for weak enemies, but later enemies just did no difference really anyway. Unless you have Guard II, in which case SnS is the best weapon...
