The only thing I can say is try not to mash the button a lot of times extremely fast, there's no reason that user input should be in any way capable of being a problem but it's just barely conceivable that that might be a contributing factor if people have done it. 

If anyone breaks the exit by mischief while it is operational I will murder them.

i think 1.4 has something funky going on with switches... half of mine stopped working till i tore them down added them back and all my pressure plates have failed

I don't know about your stuff, but I was just at WIck's exit and all the remaining broken torches decided to work again.  It wasn't hard to un-bypass the bypassed sections and close the station back up.  Maybe there was something going on with Mojang where they re-broke it and re-fixed it.  Whatever the case may be, the nightmare is over.  For now. 

...Where have you got that many switches and pressure plates?  I'd had the impression no one was really messing very much with redstone on the server other than me.
