what would you have done? you just admitted yourself you didn't know that small rodents can't get rabies (wich is not true by the way, just very unlikely).

as it unfolded you stand between a unusual behaving animal with a possible dangerous desease and some kids.

I would've tried to catch him and put him in a cage, and then call Animal Control. I certainly wouldn't have hit him with pepper spray.

catch it with your hands?  you have nothing to catch it and you have no cage. you walk away to get something a kid gets bitten meanwhile.

 he could have kicked or shot it, now that would have been stupid. but with the information i have i don't see him actung stupid. desperately maybe.
