If you read up on Retro's history then they were quite a mess until about ten years ago... When Nintendo started working with them they had multiple projects in development that were quite mediocre, and at one point Nintendo basically took control of the studio, appointed new management, and canceled everything they had except Metroid... So yes, it could definitely happen again. |
This is definitely something most people don't know. The retro staff had huge turnover in terms of designers and programmers while still trying to manage multiple projects. Even the CEO of Retro was exalted from his position in the last year of the first Metroid Prime!
You can read all about it here http://www.n-sider.com/contentview.php?contentid=267&page=1
Not only that, but this happens in many studios today, perhaps not as much, but who knows maybe even more so. Nintendo doesn't necessarily need to find good people, they just need to find an outside studio that they can have a decent amount of control in.
