As the League of Legends’ first season comes to a close, announced by Riot games today, the championship is to be held on June 20th for a purse of $100,000.

Riot Games, developer and publisher of the award-winning PC game League of Legends, today announced details of the Season One Championship – the culmination of the first season of League of Legends. With $100,000 in cash on the line and the chance to be crowned as the first ever world champions of the hit multiplayer online title’s battle arena. Competitive players everywhere will be watching as the finals unfold in Jönköping, Sweden on June 20, 2011.

Beginning on June 18th, running through the 21st, when the awards ceremony will be held, eight of the best League of Legends teams in the world will vie for the title, and the huge cash prize.

Marc Merrill, president of Riot Games and executive producer of League of Legends commented, “League of Legends is quickly gaining in popularity as a competitive PC gaming experience, and the amount of support we’ve received from the eSports community is inspiring! We wanted to bring the end of Season One directly to our players and fans – the Championship at Dreamhack is going to be the largest, most competitive gathering of players, and will doubtless produce some exhilarating matches. We’re going to make the viewing experience amazing for folks at home, too – over 140,000 viewers streamed the Intel Extreme Masters exhibition match, and we can’t wait to see how many people tune in for the Championship!”
