The DS Lite was released as a means to fix many aesthetic problems with the original DS.  The DSi was released to enable firmware, DSiWare, new UI and the cameras.   Because the 3DS is already well enabled in those facets, a redeisgn is not as imperative as it was with the DS and even DS Lite.

2014 at the earliest.

Battery life was sacrificed, so there is something that needs fixing.

A single factor that can be remedied via 3rd party battery replacements is not as dire as the factors that plagued the DS and DS Lite.   I'm not making light of the short battery life of the 3DS, simply that comapring it to the whole of the problems on the DS and DS Lite are not justified.

Actually, I think it is justified, based on the fact that battery life has been a major issue in just about every handheld's success. Not claiming it's the only factor, but it's something that can't be ignored or marginalized.

And relying on third parties to fix the problem didn't help the PSP get over its battery life image.

Battery life WAS a major issue in just about every handhelds success BECAUSE:  The old days you needed sometimes up to 6 aa batteries to run the machine and if they only lasted 2 hours.  The consumer was getting not only inconvenienced, but also boned on buying batteries like they were going out of style.  Today's handhelds have rechargeable battery packs and come with charging cradles or available car chargers and can be played while charging.  It's all but not quite a moot point now.  3 hours or more of wireless free gaming with that kind of performance is plenty adequate...lets not get carried away.

I'm with Viper, also on revision time as well.  no earlier than 2013 and perhaps 14.  How they will upgrade it however, is beyond me at this point.  It's a really nifty gadget with a lot of stuff built in that won;t be fully realized or utilized for quite some time to come by the devs.
