Oh, I doubt anyone actually cares, but it turns out the new design uses 15 or 16 redstone torches (depending on if something needed inverting), something like 80 redstone wire, and one redstone repeater. The old station needed 2 to 4 torches (depending) and probably more like 35 redstone.
Honestly, I'm surprised it's even that close, but I guess the distance between the switches and the track does add up. The challenge in the new design is, of course, figuring out how to cram in the circuitry without using TOO much space. I tried to limit myself to only going as low as the station already is, and only using the space under the exit itself and the immediately adjoining exit track. I've only had to fudge a little, e.g. by sneaking under the highway track a couple of blocks.
