All I can find right now is that the Nintendo DS sold about 500k week one in the US market. It was released on November 24th for $149.99. So the 3DS beat the DS even though the original was released in the middle of the holiday season for $100 less. You'd expect it to beat it of course but it's still worthwhile noting the performance of each system in terms of the date and price. Edit: Also Australia, "19,191 units were sold from Thursday 24 February to close of business Sunday 27 February." Also, Australia: DS - $199.95, sales of 19,191 3DS - $300 - 349.95 (depending where you bought it from) sales of 31,271

Looks like 4 million shipped was an overestimate, but atleast the news of preorders on the second shipment is a good sign.
Personally, i think April 14th will show bigger numbers than what VGC is showing.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
