Also it looks like MH is more popular on handhelds but not on consoles. Though the difference is that DQ has the same fanbase for main series titles, handheld or not, while not everyone who buys MHP buys the console versions.

Also, to add to this, the sales for the last 3 major DQ games seems to show a standard fanbase of about 3.5 million in Japan.  With extra sales coming from advertising.  And even for remakes, DQ remakes make about 1.5 million each.  Usually remakes only make at best 1/4 the amount the original title does, but DQ and Pokemon are the exception.
