there is clearly no reason for anyone to switch back to another browser since they seem more or less all similar for "basic surfing on the web" which the only thing the casual surfer really wants.

IE has been the king, before being the dying king, just because it was given with Windows.
Progressively, one could hope that the illegitimate IE/Window dominance will finally come to an end ...

Well, performance isn't everything. Compliance is. IE will not display every website correctly as it doesn't support a lot of the JS, CSS, and HTML5 tag functions. It also does not support half the media types as FireFox or Chrome. For basic browsing, you need compliance to standards.
