Pretty much. Spreadsheet or a piece of paper, taking account of what pokemon you want to fight (considering the EV's that they give out), if you're using EV-enhancing items (Macho Brace, Power Bracer, etc) and/or if your pokemon have the Pokerus. 


That's like... studying. Getting homework from your game...

It is a bit like, I do it by tallying them up on a sheet of paper while having a list next to me of EVs each Pokemon gives out. It isnt that hard to pick up though. I started doing it when Gen IV came out after discovering why my squad sucked on an online forum and reading some walkthrough of the Game Mechanics (EVs, Natures etc).

Ive found I enjoy the game more as my team beats the in-game opponents much easier. After maxing out my squads EVs on pearl, they flattened the Elite Four, even with one Pokemon who Id used as an EV sponge. I then managed to get to the Tower Tycoon in the Battle Tower and beat him aswell, after struggling in the Frontier in Emerald and not getting a single symbol. never finished Platinum and yet to finish SoulSilver so dont know how I would have fared in the those Frontiers.
