It is not free, it is money taken from their consumers which they don't really want to pay
Anyway, I feel it is wrong to pay for online. When I buy a game, I am paying for the development of the multiplayer, so I see no need to pay for it again. I have paid for online a bit, because I want to play Halo Wars and Gears of War online, but I have paid for only around 4 months of gold in my 2 1/2 years of owning an Xbox
