Even a small fireball -whatever the resolution of the screen- grows to a wide visual angle if it pops out enough and comes "close" (in the 3d sense) to your eyes, but it can't obviously be displayed outside the visual angle of the screen that is "behind" it.

Thus, the OP is right in his explanation involving the absolute size of the screen, not the resolution in comparison to - say - a movie theater. Or more exactly, the angle under which you see the 3ds screen compared to the much wider angle under which you see the screen at a cinema, which are a function of the absolute size of the screen and the absolute distance from your eyes.

If it's still not clear, you should try drawing some sketches with paper and pencil.
