3DS is priced too high, and is relying too much on technical prowess to sell. I've always felt like Nintendo were pulling a PSP/PS3 with this, and that hasn't changed, only they don't have the network needed to back up such a product.
NGP really does have a chance to outdo the 3DS in Japan, assuming it's priced similarly. Given the features it packs and its plethora of potential control schemes, it has some serious potential in the region.
I think Nintendo could've done either of two things to ensure the 3DS hit the ground running:
If either of these had happened, we'd be looking at quite a different picture. That being said, titles like the Ocarina of Time Remake should have a nice effect on sales throughout the year. However, neither that nor any of the other titles with set release dates will be as big as Pokemon, Mario Kart, of Super Mario Bros. on DS.
Hopefully Mario Kart 3DS will hit before the end of the year.
