I don't know why, but Mortal Kombat has just lost all its charm on me. It was awesome in the 2D days when it was like a bad B movie and didn't take itself too seriously but now it's trying to be too realistic and it's just not as cool.

This game is going back to the 2D fighting plane. MK always had a bit of retardedness, and thats still preserved through Cage and Stryker. How is tearing someone apart with your bare hands using a shadow clone of yourself realistic ?

It just doesn't translate well with the realistic art style. I realize it's still played on the 2D plane and that's cool and all but it has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. The fact that these realistic looking characters are tearing people apart and blowing them into small chunks just looks silly and not in a good way like the original Mortal Kombat.

This is far and away the weirdest comparison I've ever heard, and you know why. That's the stunning part. You have the temerity to complain about "realistic art styles" when comparing to a game where sprites were made with photographs.

I completely agree it's weird and stupid, maybe the photo-sprites are just so bad that it's funny, I don't know. I just know I watch those fatalities and none of them just really look right. The only two reasons I can guess is that either it just doesn't translate to the fully rendered high quality 3D or the violence just isn't as new.
I still laugh at the even the worst old Mortal Kombat fatalities when I see them so unless I'm just laughing at the nortaligia (which I don't think I am) it isn't that so I have to assume it's the art style.
