Forums - Gaming - Mortal Kombat (2011) Official Thread

Mortal Kombat is set to release on the 19th of April in America and on the 21st of April in PAL territories. The game is developed by NetherRealm Studios and is led by series co-creator Ed Boon.

The new Mortal Kombat game is a re-telling of the MK1 to UMK3 storyline, meaning very few of the post UMK3 will feature in the game, and is shaping up to be the best MK game ever made.

Some hard facts about the reboot of the franchise

  • Return to the 2D fighting plane.
  • Characters don't suffer from the lack of personality anymore. Ninjas aren't colour swaps any longer. Each fighter feels different to use.
  • Conscious efforts to balance the fighters (which seems to be paying off well). For example, as Sub-Zero is a character that likes to fight in his own pace by having multiple moves that can freeze the opponent, he is kinda slow compared to someone like Mileena or Scorpion, who have faster, yet less powerful combos.
  • In addition to Special Moves, fighters have their own mini-combo moves that make use of their abilities. For example, Scorpion has a combo ending black flip kick that has fire elements in it and sub-zero has a pop up that can freeze his enemy is mid air (for a shorter period of time than the iceball) that can lead into combos.
  • Classic stages revamped in glorius high definition.
  • "Toasty" is back.
  • Post game DLC support is confirmed. The first DLC pack will include playable characters Kenshi from Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance and the new combatant Scarlet.

What is new to the game ?

The Super Meter

New to the game is the super meter, which consists of three bars, which are filled somewhat when inflicting damage and filled more when getting beat up. When one third full, the super meter can be used to enhance a special move. Sub-zero's ice ball becomes an ice beam which can't be jumped over, reptile's force ball is bigger, mileena does two teleport kicks instead of one, etc. etc. This uses up 1/3 of the meter. Using 2/3 of the meter, combo breakers are used. If you chose to save up the entire 3 bars of the meter, you can unleash a devastating X-ray attack which does internal damage.

Tag-Team

Watch the game's senior producer, Hans Lo explain about the tag-team mode below. Tag Team Mode Allows 4 players to play local multiplayer, which should (obviously) be fun.

 Game Modes

Arcade

Fight against a classic arcade ladder including sub-bosses, bosses and secret fights which has been a staple of the series since its inception. There is an option to fight against tag-team or single player ladders.

Story Mode

Mortal Kombat boasts a very lengthy Story Mode (rumoured to be as long as 15 hours) with robust cutscenes, letting the player take control of a few characters. Ed Boon has mentioned that the choices you make during story mode can affect the storyline, meaning multiple playthroughs are possible.

I have 100% faith that NRS will deliver handsomely with this game. This is definitely looking to be the best mortal kombat game ever made. But I guess you shouldn't get too hyped to a level that it will never live up to your expectations.

Mortal Kombat to use online pass - Report

Warner Bros. looks set to be the latest publisher to introduce an online pass for its games, according to evidence uncovered by Joystiq.

The blog managed to get its hands on an email sent from Warner Bros. to retailers that says NetherRealms Studios' Mortal Kombat will include a "one-time-use registration code" that grants the player access to the game's online features.

According to the report, the online pass will be available for second-hand buyers from Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

The Warner email reads: "Mortal Kombat, available on April 19 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, includes a one-time-use registration code that gives players access to all online modes in the game.

"Players who do not have a code will get a free two-day trial of the online play and then be able to purchase the online modes for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network."

It's reported that WB won't allude to the online pass in its promotional material or even on the game's box.

Rumours also suggest F.E.A.R. 3 and Batman: Arkham City will make use of an online pass, in the former's case for multiplayer features and in the case of Batman for some form of exclusive content.

Bullshit.

Bullshit.

Yeah, for cheap people just as well I buy all my games new, especially MK, Kollectors edition here I come!

The problem I have this is that I have 3 other brothers who want to play this game online, so 3 of us atleast have to give way for the online pass. Like what happened with Fifa 11 even though I bought the fricken game.

>.<
