First of all you have to take into concideration that the PS2 at launch was $300. The 3DS on the other hand will be $250. It may not seem like a big difference but in order for the 3DS to shave off even $50 Million dollars off of the record $250 Million.....the 3DS would have to sell 1 million more units then the PS2 had to. On another note, i noticed that the $250 million included pretty much everything. Console, games, controllers, memory cards etc. We all know the 3DS has no extra controllers or memory cards, so how can anyone expect Nintendo to make up for that extra cash flow ???? This just proves that if Nintendo does happen to dethrone the King......it will be even that more amazing. |
No, your math is a bit off; the situation is not nearly that dire for Nintendo.
See, the PS2 sold approximately 500,000 units on launch day, which at $300 each comes to $150 million for consoles alone.
At $250 each, the 3DS has to sell 600,000 units (a mere 100,000 more than PS2, not 1m more) to match the same $150 million total for consoles alone.
Another thing that may come into play in favor of the 3DS and its full category launch are accessories. I'm not entirely sure if they will be factored in but if they are, things like car chargers, carrying cases, extra styluses, screen protectors (basically 3DS starter kits) are added things that the PS2 would not have benefited from with its launch.
