And once you have installed an MFW you can for instance run Showtime, a homebrew video player that can play MKV video files, something that PS3 owners asked for for years, but Sony always ignored.

Get PS3 media server. Or heck, if this phases you out of PSN, why bother with a console at all? Get a cheap PC w/HDMI out and connect that to your TV.

Lastly, is there any good reason as to why Sony should support .mkv? It's the standard to HD movie rips, I.E film piracy. I'd ROFL if Sony decided to support it.
