  • PS3: 1,210,000 (Total: 15.5 million; December 2009: 1,360,000 – down 11%)

NPD December 2010 Game Console US Sales Figures

Oooh! GT5 releases on 11.24.10 and the PS3 is down for the whole of December by 11%. Try again.

What's interesting, you point out the one region where GT5 wasn't expected to have a large, system-moving impact. Showing an NPD chart is useless, because nobody said GT5 would move massive systems in the Americas.

Let's try another perspective:

Pre-GT5 week (EMEAA) -

Wii 244,777 ( 10%) 29,543,008
PS3 189,005 (-15%) 19,636,579
X360 181,485 (-13%) 17,674,327

Pre-GT5 week (Japan) -

PS3 27,867 ( 45%) 5,806,913
Wii 26,017 (-31%) 10,837,944
X360 6,348 ( 197%) 1,417,179

GT5 week (Japan) -

PS3 65,618 ( 135%) 5,872,531
Wii 40,736 ( 57%) 10,878,680
X360 4,284 (-33%) 1,421,463

GT5 Week (EMEAA) -

Wii 338,491 ( 38%) 29,881,499
PS3 330,155 ( 75%) 19,966,734
X360 205,440 ( 13%) 17,879,767

Look at what console had the largest increases.

PS3 WW GT5 week -

PS3 767,677 ( 121%) 42,636,605

Same week in 2009 WW -

PS3 781,081 ( 96%) 27,957,381

PS3 EMEAA Dec 2010 WW - 1,707,733

PS3 EMEAA WW Dec 2009 WW - 1,564,482

In the region where GT5 was expected to have it's largest impact on PS3 hardware, it had it.

Very well, i'll let you have this one, but I'd argue (successfully, I might add) that NPD info is not useless, specially for companies like SCEA who are vying for top of the list in this most important market. The Americas isn't a region I'd wager SON¥ would feel overjoyed about coming up dead last in. Cheerio.
