That and good marketing. If the ads aren't there, people online aren't enough to sell a game (as we saw with both version of Okami), and if the ads make the game look bland, it won't help either (compare TV ads for Conduit 1 with ads for Bioshock 1, which you can both see on youtube).
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
