Earthquakes in Japan

1923: 7.9-magnitude, 143000 deaths

1927: 7.6-magnitude, 3000 deaths

1933: 8.4-magnitude, 3000 deaths

1943: 7.4 magnitude, 1200 deaths

1944: 8.1-magnitude, 1000 deaths

1945: 7.1-magnitude, 2000 deaths

1946: 8.1-magnitude, 1400 deaths

1948: 7.3-magnitude, 3800 deaths

1995: 6.9-magnitude, 5500 deaths

2011: 8.9-magnitude, 700 deaths so far.

So for having it's biggest earthquake in the last 100 years the death toll is amazingly good.

where did you get your numbers, they are expecting 100k deaths, also 2000 people have washed up on a beach in japan. 700 deaths will balloon out

Yeh that was early numbers, that's why I wrote "so far".
