Personally i thought japan held up well through the 5th BIGGEST EARTHQUAKE EVER RECORDED IN HISTORY! I mean if it wasnt for the tsunamis I don’t think the casuality count wouldn’t even pass a 100 or even 50.

Luckily the epicenter was in the ocean, 8.9 would have destroyed any city to  dust.

I know but the epicenter was pretty darn close. I even think piece of it was inland. And if u look at the footage all the houses close to the epicenter at senbai was relativily unharm till the tsunami sweep in. That, plus the quake's duration was more than 5 mins. FIVE MINUTES!! 8.9 for five minutes is incomprehensible to me.

It wasnt far but it wasnt that close either. 7 at most in Senpai. 8.9 would completely destroy anything. Not to say that 7 isnt strong though. In the end, your right, most of the damage was caused by the tsunami, thats because the city werent hit by an 8.9. Maybe you know that already but Richter scale is exponential, the difference between a 6.5 and 8.9 is enormous.
