So... what exactly does dictate what the market is? If you play your machine on the subway/toilet/couch or just on the couch? That's it? Sony's pretty much proven how well they can lead this gen. The biggest userbase decline in Japanese history combined with a platform whose fluke success is attributable to Capcom alone pretty much. Today's SCEI couldn't lead their way out of a paper bag. |
I suppose it's hard for you to give Sony where credit is due. That's okay, though. MH would probably not have the same success on the DS where it was saturated with stuff already. Also, gamers are buying other stuff on the PSP besides MH and that's why it's being supported like it is. The initial interest to fuel the PSP rebirth started when the slim came out with Crisis Core.
And as much as you like to tout the failure of the PS3 and dance about it, there has been no console in history that almost went into oblivion and pulled themselves out of it.
For all the expertise on Japanese culture you claim, have you lived there? Been there before? When I lived there, I can say that the two markets (handheld & console) are two distinctly different segments. The difference from the West is that the handheld market is the primary market while the console market is the secondary market. They are still different segments.
The Wii was clearly the market leader in its segment and Sony got smart. Nintendo was basking in all their profits and seemingly invincible sales and forgot about having a longer term plan to keep the success going. The casuals (which was their main market) are very trend oriented and care about what others are doing more than the core. The sales pattern of the Wii clearly show that.
Just because you don't like Sony doesn't change the fact that they pulled out of their bad position better than other non-leading consoles ever did in history. And yes, Sony had alot to do with it. Yes, Sony spent tons of money to get the PS3 back on track. Sure, it may seem like a failure. However, investors care more about profits going forward than the sunk costs. SCE is looking to be profitable going forward. Sunk costs give lessons on how to approach future projects (like the PS4 and NGP). I can assure you that Kaz Hirai knows more what he is doing than Ken Kutaragi in this aspect.
Saying that "SCEI can't lead their way out of a paper bag" is quite the contrary this generation. They did quite well being in one of the worst positions in gaming history at the beginning of the generation.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
