The Japanese don't care.  They went from PS2 to DS.  "Console market" is a western construct.

The 12 million people who bought a Wii in Japan would tend to disagree I think.  They didn't buy that because they mistook it for a DS.  They want games.  It's not their fault they're not getting them.  On PS3, games are doing pretty well.
