I said it before, a crappy projector would look crappy. Projectors competing with big 3D TVs are priced in 4-digits territory. As part of a console a single part should definitely not cost over 100$. Now look at what type of projectors you'd get for under 100$, or let's say even under 200$... ... yes... you'd get something crappy looking.
Motion tech was also considered weird, but at least the tech was relatively cheap.
