ckmlb said: The so called big flood of huge 3rd party games to Wii still hasn't come even though it's clear that it is selling more than the other two consoles now, anyone wonder why that is? I mean all the new games announced are small quick cash ins that look terribly made and are really unappealing to the average video gamer. |
It's not that difficult to figure out. Umm, huge 3rd party games take time, anywhere from 12-24 months. The 3rd parties, Ubisoft and THQ excepted, almost totally ignored the Wii until after it launched. We're 6 months since launch, take a guess why games that take 12-24 months to make haven't arrived yet. The crap quick shovelware fad was the other side of this missing the boat coin. They needed something on the Wii and quick, their shareholders were very upset that they posted lower than expected earnings since they bet on the PS3 and not the Wii so they put out tons of cheap games to make a quick buck and tell their shareholders we have 18 games coming out for the Wii by Juy (nevermind they're all crapware).
I hate to self advertise but I a thread about the Wii's 3rd party sales. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=1967
This sums up the general point of the post nicely, US sales of 7 multiplatform 3rd party games, total sales/% of sales by system/attach rate x 100 using current system sales

Make decent games and they sell well on the Wii, it's that simple. I believe those are in rough order of release. The first 4 were launch games, then Tiger, Sonic, and Spiderman. The Wii's share of those games increased with its growing market share. Some interesting notes, the worst performing Wii game, Spiderman 3, the worst Wii game up there. Second worst, NFS Carbon, the second worst of the Wii ports. If you include this weeks Spiderman3 sales and of the recent 3 games the 360 sold ~900k and the Wii ~500k. The 360 sold 80% more of those 3 games with 120% more systems (although the 360's greater Spiderman sales and Wii's greater hardware sales means it'll be more like 90% and 110% soon). The first 4 games were released when the Wii had just over 1 million users and the 360 ~5 million, so even there the 360 selling 4.5 times as many games isn't bad for the Wii. I know it's a small sample of only 7 games but it does show that 3rd party games can sell on the Wii, in some cases better than on the 360. Combine a fast growing install base, decent attach rates, and lower development cost and the Wii will soon be the best system to put a game on profit wise.
