I meant in the context of the rejection of the original versions of the original trilogy in general. And he knows he disconnected with his audience, behind-the-scenes footage for the prequels often hints at it. Every time he defends the special editions it hints at it.
As to what the audience wants: hard to ignore how ticket sales for the prequels didn't match those of the original trilogy, if you want to get into that.
