As far as hype, I'm not talking about sales predictions, just general interest and excitement in the product. The GBA was cut short by Nintendo, not Sony. No matter what Sony does, it is Nintendo who decides when to discontinue support for it. And while the last game they published for the GBA came out in 2006, the GBA was actually still on shelves in 2008. So that's actually ~ 7 years it took to reach that final number, not 3. So that means that the PSP needs to ship ~ 13 mil by the end of this year to reach that goal, which given its recent price cut and a holiday boost near the end of the year, I think it can get pretty darn close to accomplishing that. And for anyone to even get close or tie ANY of Nintendo's handhelds would have been deemed impossible just a few years back. Again, the highest anyone ever sold was Sega's Game Gear at 11 mil. The PSP will end up being ~ 8 times that amount. I think its quite foolish to say that the graphics of the NGP aren't greatly ahead of the 3DS. The 3DS, in terms of graphics, truly looks like a slightly improved PSP. They can push it slightly more in terms of polygons, but the biggest difference I have seen is shadowing. The NGP games, on the other hand, looks almost as good as a PS3 game. Some developers have said they even took the assests from the PS3 counterpart, altered only slightly, and were able to run them on the NGP. And for game capacity, the UMD only had 1.8 GB, but the vast majority of games fit on a single disc. I think the NGP will be fine with only 4 GB. Besides, given that it is flash memory, that limit can always be raised in the future quite easily. And let's not get on the topic of ports, because the 3DS has many of those incoming, too. Besides, I'm not even sure if any real ports have been announced for the NGP. Some of the games we saw were only tech demos, like MGS4. And Uncharted is confirmed to be an original chapter just for the NGP, as I'm guessing most games will turn out to be. As far as those "5 minute games" you're talking about, Sony already has a huge line up of Minis available on the PS Store. Then you have the casual games: Hot Shots Golf (uses a very unique way to control the camera), Hustle Kings, LBP, Little Deviants (uses a very unique way to control gameplay that I haven't seen anywhere else), Reality Fighters, and Smart As. Of course, we'll probably find out about more games at E3. |
I got to "The 3DS, in terms of graphics, truly looks like a slightly improved PSP" gave up on giving you credit and just pulled a tl;dr that's a joke and a half in of itself, no reason to even continue this debate if you're going to say stuff like that cause it won't go anywhere.
