Its been pretty common, we played pokemon red with friends on our last year in school and named pokemon with silly names and things like that. It was like a revival of the times we were 9 or 10 and played them for the first time.
While the enthusiasm may be less, its still fun to play them, and nostalgia is a thing that helps and I think it explains why people prefer(or at least I) the old games, add to that that you dont need a gameboy anymore and its as accessible as playing brick breaker on the blackberry, and you dont need a superphone given that the games dont requiere much.
