"fraction" means "less than the whole", not a tiny amount. It's large, but that doesn't mean it's the only possible audience. And saying that "core" games sell less doesn't mean to stop trying at all.
Plus justifying the poor variety of genres on the other systems with that is no better.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
