A camera "reads" a special picture (Eye of Judgment on PS3, Invizimals on PSP, AR cards on 3DS) and then the video game system generates a 3D model based on that information. In the end it's just something to fool around or to show off, once you've seen it a few times you likely won't care for it anymore, because how does this substantially add to the game experience?
