I think he might be saying he invests less than $1,000 per year.  But yeah, the cost will be in the thousands (but less than 10 I believe).  I don't really see why there is no option for people who are between those with a casual interest and large investors/corporations.  Although I guess if there was a ~$100/yr or less subscription that gave all the previously free data plus some new things, it would make selling the subscription that costs thousands a lot more difficult.
