Culture and Religion seem like more likely options in regards to Judaism, although I did hear of some communities requireing proof of Jewish relatives in order to join them, something like grandfather must have been "jewish" or something. I agree with you, mostly. But that's what they say formally. Among themselves Jewish race is the most important. If you are a Jew by race, you are guaranteed to be accepted 100% among all jews in the world.
Anyway, my question to Xen was relevant because maybe he doesnt identify himself as "a Jew"?
I heard many who were only 1/4th (or even ½) Jewish blood migrated from Russia and Ukraine into Israel just to get a better life in the early 90's (and many were disappointed in the Israeli society so they have since then moved elsewhere, to Germany, the US and back to Russia).
