Anecdotally I'd argue that given the amount of stock present in the channels post holidays that the gift card promotions were meant to thin out the heard a little bit.

Note: I'm not suggesting that Sony OVERSTUFFED the channels beyond belief, I'm suggesting that demand for the the PS3's in NA was over-estimated and the post holiday gift card incentives were used to address that.

On topic, good numbers for all; strange to see the Wii behind the PS3 and 360 though...just so used to it being at the top!

Its a rumor: Sony is trying to get rid of the 160gb to bring in a "hack proof" 300 gb Ps3. It makes sense too with all the deals and bundles going around. 

That sounds reasonable, the two points I'd bring up against this being a Sony sponsored promotion for clearing out stock are:

  1. The biggest retailer, Wal-Mart has had no such deal, right?  It's been Amazon, Best Buy and Target, and they all seem in response to the other, not all starting and stopping the promotion at set times.
  2. These gift card deals have been going on since early January, why would they have started to clear out stock for a "hack proof" PS3, way back then?

Regardless, I'm not trying to hate on the PS3, I like my PS3 plenty, just seems kind of an odd way for them to address a hacking issue (with a HARDware upgrade).
