Lower backlight levels are surely sufficient, but I like it brighter and have it on level 4. There's also an "energy saving" option, which makes the picture look a bit different (hard to describe...), but I'm not sure what it does exactly.
Today I used my 3DS about 2 hours with 3D on maximum and I report: no headache. :)
