If you make your own mines, I'd suggest trying exploring caves. Be careful and take plenty of wheat (for when you aren't in a hurry to heal), chops (for when you are), and arrows (because zombies are friggin Terminators in multi -- lag?). Also you want wood to make more stuff with -- like torches. Coal won't be a problem 
Apparently just exploring the surface has been good for goddog, but I've never found one like that here or in single and I wouldn't bet on it if I were you.
