Go back to the 80's and check Ghostbuster, Double dragon, Final Fight and such. Some games don't even have endings (5th axe anyone).
You also have Soul Reaver 2. So you spend the whole game running after Kain. You finally corner him in an arena. You're ready for the big final fight and... he opens a TP and fly away. And that's it. See you in SR3 (which was never released).

Legacy of Kain: Defiance says hi.


It was the end of the Legacy of Kain series, but not exactly the direct sequel of Soul Reaver. The women who wrote the story explained in an interview that SR3 as it was supposed to be was cancelled and she had to "merge" the two series in the final "Defiance".

Is that what happened....I actually never played Defiance, but I own it.  My roommate played my copy when I first got it....and I just never felt like going back, since I had seen a bunch of the story already watching him play.  I also thought Soul Reaver 2 didn't quite live up to teh first one.  It was prettier, but too linear.
