Several reasons. The Wii userbase is obviously far bigger now than when Zelda: TP debuted, and Twilight Princess was basically a GC game to begin with; Skyward Sword is the first full fledged Wii Zelda. And Zelda: SS is being developed with appealing to more people in mind (i.e. the Wii's huge audience).
Also, if you count the GC version of Zelda: TP in addition to the Wii version neither Gears has sold more.
