Actually, it's because Nintendo put the more attractive product. Literally the entirely industry was against them (publishers, developers, analysts, press) and they still literally pulled off the impossible almost single handedly. Consumers chose Nintendo, and at the end of the day, consumers are still the single most important segment of this industry.
Sony fucking up had little to do with Nintendo's success; it's not like publishers and developers moved en masse to Wii in response... they just kept making PS3 games (ie: porting 360 games) instead. It's not like analysts reversed their stances, hell "Wii Fad" almost became an annually repeated anthem. The industry press didn't come around either, instead they just dug in are perpetuated the core/casual binary for all it was worth. Despite being the fastest selling games system in history with unparalleled mass consumer adoption, Wii is still outwardly reviled by the more traditional sectors of the industry to this day. Sony screwing up had almost no impact on Wii, some impact on 360 and a LOT of impact on PS3.
Nintendo screwing up on the other hand... well, let's just say if Nintendo had stuck a CD-ROM drive in N64, there probably wouldn't even be a PlayStation 2. ;)
