Cake is very complicated, as is mushroom stew (never made it TBH), but bread is ideal IMO. 

I keep hearing people badmouth bread since porkchops heal 4 when cooked, but I disagree.  If people explore mostly above ground, obviously you'll probably run across as many pigs as you could possibly want.  But for those of us who mainly explore underground (caves), prokchops are -- while very useful -- far too rare to use exclusively:  they run out too fast, because pigs are pretty much never to be found deep underground. 

Wheat, however, CAN be grown underground (given sufficient light sources), so it's ideal for prolonged explorations.  And even if your field is at ground level, you can reap your field much faster than going out and finding 6-12 pigs. 

Moreover, wheat is stackable, meaning that for non-emergency healing it is extremely efficient for inventory space versus healing potential, assuming you have a craft box (which you pretty much have to have anyway).  I keep porkchops for emergency healing. 

Sorry for that huge rant, but I see people undervaluing bread pretty severely in the Minecraft wiki IMO, and I don't want to make a user account just for that, so I had to vent.
