Though Nintendo's sales-crushing power has slowed down in recent months on the hardware end, it is no slouch when it comes to pushing software. Last week, the company posted revenues of ¥807.99 billion ($9.76 billion) for the nine-month period ending on December 31, 2010, down 31 percent from ¥1.182 trillion during the same period the previous year. But while some publishers struggled to clear a million copies sold for some of their titles, Nintendo boasts perennial hits and brand-new performers for most of 2010.
The Wii-branded titles continue to pull in sales for Nintendo, with Wii Sports leading the pack with 12.19 million sold during the nine-month period. Its sequel, Wii Sports Resort, sold 10.21 million units. Wii Fit Plus and Wii Party sold just around half of that, at 5.09 million and 5.07 million, respectively.
Nintendo's stable of classic IP pushed impressive sales as well, with New Super Mario Bros Wii having sold 6.58 million copies during the nine-month block. Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold 6.15 million units since its debut in May of 2010. Even more impressive is Donkey Kong Country Returns, which sold 4.21 million copies in the span of just over a month; from November 21, 2010 to the period's end, December 31, 2010. Kirby's Epic Yarn had a modest showing (for Nintendo) with 1.38 million copies sold since October 2010. Finally, Mario Kart Wii continues to sell almost three years after its debut with 3.95 million sold, while the limited edition Super Mario All-Stars pulled in 1.95 million.
For the Nintendo DS, Pokemon unsurprisingly drew in 8.64 million copies across four different versions: Pokemon Black/White sold 5.32 million, while the remakes HeartGold/SoulSilver sold 3.32 million units. Mario came in a strong second place on the handheld with New Super Mario Bros pushing 3.73 million and Mario Kart DS selling 2.8 million copies, just over 5 years since its release in November 2005. Other games hovering around the 1 to 2 million mark included Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Art Academy, Mario vs Donkey Kong, and Dragon Quest IX.
