Totally. Lately I have gained faith in the PS3 as it's reached 19.7% market share, a 1.5%+ increase in 2 months! |
I'd have to disagree.
I think the GameCube's user base was largely not even Nintendo fans. I know when GameCube came out many of the Nintendo fans I knew turned to Microsoft. Waiting out the storm they said they'd try again next gen. Alot of the people who bought GameCubes were either casual gamers, budget gamers or parents.
The cheap price of the GameCube was a major draw for parents and casual gamers who don't tend to want to spend way to much money on consoles. I think this is proven by the drastic drop in software sales from N64 to GameCube. First Party titles that sold nearly ten mill on N64 only break the 3-million mark with only a roughly 30% hardware differance.
This generation again I think many Nintendo die hard fans may have either bought the Wii already or converted entirely to Microsoft's 360. But the die hard fan base is far smaller then it used to be.
Now this might sound contradictory to my point. My point is many of the GameCube buyers bought the GameCube after constant price cuts. I mean the GameCube made a slight comeback starting in what 2004-2006. When the hardware's price had been cut substantially cheaper and the intensity of classical first party software began to flow.
I think right now about half the GameCube's user base has likely upgraded to the Wii. I think the remaining half is likely the budget gamers and parent's who don't want to or can't afford to buy their kids super expensive consoles. I'd expect Nintendo Wii sales to boost immensly when Nintendo decides to cut its price!
Nintendo can also maintain higher sales by releasing the various other colours or maybe a new model. I know the flaps on the top of the Wii are very weak mine snapped off already. Many improvements could be made. With some price cuts, boost in first party software and new colours or models Nintendo could maintain these sales for a very long time!
